- Fall 2009 Theme: “Bicycling Safety: Dangerous Distractions” Videos must be submitted by Monday, November 2, 2009 no later than 4:00 p.m.
Requirement: The videos submitted for this theme must creatively illustrate the dangerous distractions that bicyclists might encounter, which may include (but are not limited to): talking or texting on mobile phone, talking with friends, wearing headphones, looking at objects to the side, adjusting clothing or helmet.
In Spring 2010, middle school students will have another opportunity to submit a video on another traffic safety theme (to be announced). The “Top 10” videos from each theme (up to 20 videos total) will move on as finalists in the “Street Smarts Mini Short” category at the 2010 Danville International Children’s Film Festival and will be aired on cable television.

- Each video entry is eligible to win more great prizes at a drawing held during the judging of the finalists at the 2010 Danville Children’s International Film Festival. Students must be present to win.
Finalists of the Fall contest theme will be announced in December 2009. The winners of both Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 contests will be announced at the 2010 Danville Children’s International Film Festival tentatively scheduled for May 2010 (date to be confirmed).
What the judges are looking for
Each video will be evaluated based on:
- 50% Content: Does it follow the theme and is it persuasive?
- 25% Creativity: Does it hold our interest?
- 25% Video Production: Can we see it and hear it clearly?

Who can enter?
- Any middle school student in the San Ramon Valley (reside or attend school in the San Ramon Valley)
- A group of San Ramon Valley middle school students (as part of a club, organization, or class)
While there are no limitations on the number of people who can work on the development of a video, only a maximum of four (4) individuals are allowed to be on record as the official video production team members. All members must be middle school students. Also, with the exception of the random prize drawing, all other prizes are awarded to the video entry. In other words, if a production team made the winning video, then the entire team will share the winnings, in whatever manner that the team deems to be appropriate.
What are the rules?
Do’s
- Do submit a 60 second (or shorter) video on a DVD;
- Do complete the entire Entry Form and all necessary Release Forms (available online, and at the end of this document);
- Do find a Video Advisor (parent, teacher, other), who is 19 years or older, and list this person on the Entry Form;
- Do include a list of credits and image(s) of the video production team as part of the video;
- Do feature the Street Smarts logo prominently throughout the video;
- Do feature the Street Smarts program public sponsors – Town of Danville, City of San Ramon, San Ramon Valley Unified School District, County of Contra Costa District 3 - in the video credits;
- Do be creative (and being funny helps)!
Don’ts
- Do not place any member of the production team, or any member of the public, in imminent danger, while making the video;
- Do not include any obscene or indecent matter in the video;
- Do not include libelous or slanderous matter in the video;
- Do not include matter which is subject to copyright, except where it can be demonstrated to comply with applicable laws, in the video;
- Do not violate any of the applicable operating policies or procedures of Contra Costa Television (CCTV), Tri-Valley Community Television (TV30), or Comcast Cable. These operating policies and procedures are available at www.streetsmarts-srv.com or upon request;
- If this video is produced within the structure of an organization or a class, do not violate any additional rules, operating policies or procedures (which may be more stringent than the limitations described above) so long as these rules, operating policies or procedures are in compliance with applicable law.
Videos that incorporate any of the “Don’ts” are automatically disqualified. Street Smarts reserves the right to determine if the rules and guidelines are followed.
